Wayfinding System

Venice

Venice is built on an agglomeration of small islands, surrounded by a lagoon. Venice is divided into six districts which are called Cannaregio, Dorsoduro, San Polo, San Marco, Santa Croce, and Castello. Travelers usually get around by gondolas or walking.  Finding a place in Venice is difficult because there are few straight roads in Venice coupled with the unusual terrain and invalid house numbers. Travelers often get lost in the alleys of Venice.

User Group

The principal user group will be travelers in Vinese who are Chinese. It is difficult for Chinese travelers to find a location in Venice because of the language barrier. The secondary user group is other international travelers. Venice has travelers from all over the world who are troubled by getting lost in the alleys of Venice.  I chose the tone that matches the overall architectural color of Venice as the main color of the software to bring users an immersive travel experience.

Concept

To solve the problem of wayfinding in Venice, I wanted to design an app for my target user group which is the non-Italian travelers. This software is a map system, but this navigation system is more precise than the general navigation system. While there is route guidance, Chinese pictographs will be used to play the role of marker guidance. If travelers are still unsure or similar indicators appear, they can use the software’s factual road guidance, which will point to the correct path on the screen through the phone’s camera.
